Flanders, the northern part of Belgium, became infamous in World War I to the soldiers in the trenches. John McCrae wrote his most famous poem in Flanders near Ypres :

         In Flanders Fields the poppies blow, between the crosses row on row... “

These poppies bloomed across some of the most devastated battlefields in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilt in the war.

Flanders Fields is associated with the battles of the Yser, Ypres, Passchendaele and the Somme.

          “I died in hell, they called it Passchendaele”

           “Good God, did we really send men to fight in that?”

          “He’s not missing, he’s here”
